Mistake 9

Mismanaging Time

Time constraints are the companion issue to endless work. Both issues challenge principals. The lament about “lack of time” is heard from adults from many fields. When individuals do not address time issues, then their stress increases and their health may be compromised. Time management requires management of “self.”

Scenario 26: Open Door

Principals described the mistake of allowing time eaters to consume their days. An open office door was viewed as both a benefit and a liability depending on who came through the door. Paperwork was a challenge that could not be mastered when there was a steady stream of office visitors.

Principals described how they came to work early in the morning so they could get more paperwork finished. They reported coming in on the weekends to accomplish more work. Often they said that the teachers came to school during these times seeking to visit with the principal.

The principals said they did not know how to encourage communication while having time to complete other administrative tasks. Their time was limited and their inability to manage all the tasks was troubling to them.
